Kirkby Stephen Ground Remediation

The project involved the processing and removal of “fly” tipped materials from a former station yard in Kirkby Stephen to allow new railway sidings to be laid by the Stainmore Railway Company, a rail preservation society which is based in the yard.

 

 

 

 

Through early site investigation the previously tipped materials were found to contain asbestos, hydro carbons and organic materials as well as a large quantity of discarded car and lorry tyres. Early Contractor Involvement allowed I&H Brown to work with the Clients Representative to determine the likely quantity and type of waste within the tipped materials.

Although the works were initially let on a NEC Option C contract a number of changes were made to the work scope by the Client to suit the available funding. We worked closely with the Client to amend the Conditions to Option A, to give certainty about the final cost of the scheme.

 

The materials were processed by hand picking, screening and crushing before segregation into differing waste streams. A significant volume of material was successfully retained on site for future embankment construction. The remainder was sentenced for offsite disposal which included recycling of tyres and timber and the encapsulation of the asbestos in a suitably licensed landfill.
