History

The company was founded in 1964 by Ian and Hardie Brown, who at that time farmed in Fife. We began life as a plant hirer then evolved into sub-contracting and, from the mid-1970s, into a Civil Engineering main contractor. We have successfully completed over 500 projects and we are proud that our managing director, Scott Brown, was the first Chairman of CECA Scotland. We have subsequently provided two other chairmen.

From initially making a reputation as an expert earthworks contractor, our civil engineering division is today very broadly based. Although we still retain that earthworks expertise, we now have particular further strengths in the provision of development and energy infrastructure.

Environmental improvement work is at the heart of our business. From extensive involvement in the colliery reclamation in the 1980s, we have become Scotland’s leading contractor in the reclamation of brownfield sites and the remediation of contaminated land. Our Development Division now applies our accumulated expertise to similar sites, in addition to pursuing opportunities in their own right.

We added an Energy division to our portfolio in 1985, which initially focussed on opencast mining and saw us extract over 3 million tonnes of coal. More recently, the Energy Division has focused on renewable energy. We operate one wind farm and have gained consents for three others, generating around 85MW.

Our Plant Division quickly devolved into a separate arm of the company. Although its prime purpose is to offer internal competitive advantage to our other divisions, it also participates in the external hire market. We have always had interests in Farming and Estates and this remains so today, with land in Perthshire, Fife, East Lothian and Inverness-shire.
