A8 Junction and Spine Road, Port Glasgow

This project on the south bank of the river Clyde included the widening and improvement of a junction of the A8 trunk road and the construction of a 1,000 metre long spine road to service a new housing development at the location of the Kingston Yard in Port Glasgow.

Although much of the project comprised traditional roadworks, we faced a major challenge in identifying, then diverting or protecting, numerous live services along the existing road corridors. We also installed puffin and toucan crossings, with the commensurate need to get ducting and cable across the live A8 dual carriageway.

In addition to minimising disruption to traffic on the busy trunk road, we successfully coped with constructing the new road up to one metre above the line of the existing access routes to the docks, industrial buildings and a large service yard. The problems were resolved by constructing the new works in a carefully-planned sequence of separate phases.

The project included 4 kilometres of new foul and surface water drainage, with tails to every plot along the roadside to service each property.
