This series of projects took place at an operational landfill site near Penicuik in Midlothian on the site of a former sand and gravel quarry. The contract awarded to I & H Brown related to the construction of new cells to prolong the life of the landfill. The work involved initial site preparations, bulk earthworks, liner works, infrastructure works and new buildings to create office and accommodation space.
Construction of the cells included bulk earthworks to form the required void space, followed by placement of a clay layer. On top of the clay, the liner was 0.75mm HDPE, welded to ensure no escape of leachates or gases during subsequent waste disposal operations. The sides of the cells were lined with a geosynthetic clay, again overlaid with an HDPE liner. Also included in the base of the cell was a Sensor DDS leak detection system to monitor the integrity of the liner.
Other site development works saw the installation of a weighbridge and wheelwash at the location of the office complex. A concrete road was constructed to create access to the new cells for waste carriers. A new office accommodation block was constructed to enhance the operation of the landfill site.
Further works included the installation of substantial perimeter bunds and soft landscaping at the end of the contract, to mitigate any environmental impact on the surrounding areas.
Excellent communication with the Client’s Representative contributed to the delivery of a successful contract for all participants.
