Company profile - history

The business was started in 1964, when our first job was the clearance of a disused airfield near Perth. From an initial focus on plant hire, we moved into sub-contracting then, from the mid 1970s, into undertaking civil engineering schemes as a Main Contractor and have now successfully carried out around 400 projects. We are now firmly embedded in the construction market and we are proud to be founding members of the Civil Engineering Contractors Association in Scotland.

We added open cast mining to our portfolio in 1985, since then we have extracted more than 3 million tonnes of coal and moved in the process 40 million tonnes of rock and overburden.

For many years, we operated our own landfill at Battleby north of Perth and provided a skip hire service in the local area. Battleby is now undergoing final reinstatement.
Land reclamation and environmental improvement work has always been at the heart of our business. From extensive involvement in the reclamation of former collieries in the 1980s, it was only natural that we built up the skills and experience that allowed us to evolve into Scotland’s leading contractor in the reclamation of brownfield sites and the remediation of contaminated land. Continuing the theme, we now seek similar sites on which we can act as developer.

In another more recent extension to our interests, we have devoted considerable attention to the renewable energy market. We operate a wind farm in Northern Ireland. We are also engaged in developing new projects and have two wind farms, totalling around 50MW, at different stages in the planning process. Our first major wind farm development at Toddleburn in the Scottish Borders achieved full consent and has been sold to Scottish and Southern Energy.

Since the company’s birth, it has had farming interests and this remains so today. We own and manage land in Perthshire, Fife, East Lothian and Inverness-shire.
