This contract comprised site clearance, earthworks and enabling works across the 24hectare site of a proposed housing development for the consortium of Kier Homes, Bryant Homes and Bett Homes.
The earthworks included the excavation of a 230,000m3 stockpile of existing colliery spoil and its subsequent re-use as a structural fill material. All materials sourced from colliery waste were tested for contaminants prior to, and during, filling operations. The colliery spoil formed the founding layer for the new housing. It was overlaid by a layer of non-structural clays won from an on-site borrow pit then by topsoil from stockpiles that had initially been stripped from the site.
Several abandoned mineshafts were associated with the former colliery at this location and two were capped as part of the contract. The total earthworks quantity including colliery spoil, topsoil, unsuitable material and capping was approximately 400,000m3.
Further works included the formation of drainage swales and associated drainage systems, along with footpaths, lighting and grass seeding.
