This 1800-acre, former greenfield site, on the eastern outskirts of Dunfermline now incorporates a considerable housing development, a large single user factory site, leisure facilities, industrial zone and retail park. The contract awarded to I & H Brown elated to the initial site preparations, landscaping and service installation required before further development work could progress.
Site clearance works included large-scale bulk earthworks (in excess of 4,000,000m3) including considerable platforming for a large, single user factory, preceded by some demolition works. Some of the material used in the project was required to be site won (predominantly rock and boulder clays) thus involving the blasting and subsequent crushing and screening of such materials to ensure their suitability. This resulted in resource efficiency and cost savings for the client.
Additionally site development works then required the installation of major service and utility networks (gas, water, electric & telecommunications) throughout the site and the construction of a major on-site road infrastructure, incorporating a link to the adjacent M90 motorway junction. Further infrastructure works included in the contract involved the construction of significant foot and cycle paths, parts of which pass through scenic, woodland areas. The site foul and surface water drainage system, incorporates an extensive Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS) managing all surface water runoff generated within the site boundary, the installation of which was included within the contract remit.
Further works included significant landscaping, (mounding and planting of trees, shrubs and general seeding) together with the installation of on-site lighting systems. The large areas of site hard standing also included the construction of ornamental ponds to break up car parking areas. In conjunction with this, I & H Brown Ltd undertook the installation of lining and pumping systems, decorative stonework and all other associated M & E works.
Subcontracted works included some drainage installation, concrete works and landscaping, road surfacing and rock blasting totaling approximately £3.7 million over the project duration.
