Mining Operations

Until such time that sufficient alternative means of electricity generation exist, coal will remain a major contributor to the UK’s energy requirements. I & H Brown are one of Scotland’s leading exponents in the field of surface coal mining; from exploration through to restoration and aftercare.

Since establishing a mining division in 1985, in excess of 3 million tonnes of coal have been excavated from the company’s Scottish surface mining activities primarily for sale to the electricity generation industry. This has involved excavating in excess of 40 million cubic metres of rock.

Employing a team of professionals experienced in all aspects of surface mining, the company uses the most modern computerised survey equipment and ground modelling software available in order to assist them in assessing and designing sites.

Having obtained all the necessary permissions and licenses, the Company takes pride in operating each site to the highest standards of excellence in terms of preliminary exploration, planning application and environmental impact assessment submissions, right through to restoration and aftercare.

The restoration proposals for each site are individually tailored to blend with existing topography however, all are imaginatively restored with enhancements such as improved landform, woodland areas, wildlife habitats and public amenity areas.

It has been stated by the Scottish Executive that indigenous coal is an important contributor to energy diversity and supply and its working can strengthen the economy, as well as providing positive long-term benefits such as clearance of dereliction and removal of contamination.

I & H Brown is well positioned to pursue future opportunities to help fulfil the energy needs of the nation whilst ensuring that potential environmental impacts are addressed and minimised or eliminated.

The following coal mining sites have been worked or are currently being restored:

Braehead, Fife. Phases 1, 2 and 3.

Colton Farm, Fife. Phases 1, 2 and 3.

Woodbank, Fife

Begg Farm, Fife. Phases 1 and 2 and 3.
