image This was a two-stage project to prepare a brownfield former distillery site for housing development. Initial bulk earthworks to remove peat were followed by the construction of new access roads and mainline drainage.
Earthworks
The first part of the contract required the excavation of 50,000m3 of material, comprising a mixture of peat and suitable clays. A volume of 31,000m3 of peat was excavated to depths of up to 6 metres and placed on site to form a landscaped bund. In addition, 19,000m3 of suitable material was excavated, stockpiled and then re- used as fill. The shortfall in structural fill was sourced locally:
• On site demolition produced 25,000 m3 of material which was crushed and re-used as fill material,
• A further 6,000 m3 of crushed concrete and brickwork was sourced locally.
Roads and Drainage
The contract progressed to the construction of 1,400m of new mainline drainage, with 600m of access roads and footpaths for a 60 home development.
The main storm and foul water lines consisted of 600mm concrete pipes with plastic pipes of similar diameter outwith the road construction areas. The 152 new manholes varied in size from 1050mm diameter to 2100mm diameter and from depths of 1m up to 3.6m. We also installed all associated road gullies and house plot disconnector manholes.
image The road construction included capping, sub base, kerb logs, surfacing and the installation of all road service crossings. The capping layer used recycled brickwork in place of virgin aggregates.

Through detailed planning and programming, we ensured that our part of the overall project was completed successfully while allowing the earliest possible access for the follow-on house construction.
