This sizeable project to the south of Kings Inch Road was part of the extensive redevelopment of the general Braehead area and consisted of preparation works to allow the site to be redeveloped for residential use.
Situated just west of the successful Braehead shopping centre and Braehead Arena, the 28 Ha sites former use as an engineering works and transport depot had left a legacy of contamination. This included 24000 m3 of below ground structures and surface concrete, as well as a range of heavy metal and hydrocarbon contamination.
The remedial strategy, developed by I & H Brown, involved selective excavation of contamination hotspots. Following this over 3,500m3 of contaminated soils were sentenced for treatment via ex-situ bioremediation to allow material reuse on-site and re-classification purposes. All below-ground structures were broken out and crushed, realising considerable volumes of material suitable for on-site reuse.  The site’s location near the River Clyde required that levels were raised to provide protection against future flooding events. To this end, over 100,000m3 of suitable granular material was imported and placed in line with the Client specifications and to suit the proposed end use of the site. We achieved considerable environmental benefit through maximising our use of recycled aggregate in preference to virgin material.
An archaeological watching brief was maintained during the excavation of the foundations of Elderslie House and Elderslie Castle.
