Avondale Landfill Site, Linlithgow - 2002 to 2005

image I & H Brown has been closely associated with the Avondale Landfill in recent years.
In 2002 and 2003, we constructed new co-disposal cells. Earthworks included the excavation of several hundred thousand cubic metres of soils, which were placed to form cell bunds that included a 1m thick layer of engineered clay. The lining system also incorporated an HDPE membrane and a leak detection system. More than 150,000 tyres were placed by hand to form the leachate drainage layer. During these visits, we also capped a number of completed cells, by placing Flexible Membrane Liner, overlain by the required finishing and restoration layers. We also constructed drainage lagoons, and upgraded site access roads.

We returned in 2004 to construct the new monocell for Stabilised Non-reactive Hazardous waste.  The scope of works was broadly similar to previous visits, although in this case gravel was used for the leachate drainage layer.

In 2005, Avondale Environmental Limited awarded us the project to construct the new Cell 7 and to cap the completed Cell 6. The new cell will be used for non-hazardous waste.
The new construction included the excavation of some 60,000 cubic metres of material and the formation of perimeter bunds. We laid 19,000 square metres of new liner on a sand layer underlain by gravel drainage and also installed the new leak detection system.

The 20,000 square metres of Cell 6 were covered with a 300mm capping layer.

Overall, we have carried out in excess of £3 million of work at Avondale, while also making extensive use of the disposal facility as a “customer”.
