Argyll & Bute Waste Management partnership

The client was Shanks Waste Solutions in partnership with Argyll and Bute Council.

The purpose of the work was to achieve immediate environmental improvement and operational efficiency at three mainland waste disposal sites (Oban, Dunoon and Lochilphead) and four island sites (Mull, Tiree, Islay and Bute), through the construction of new leachate and surface water management facilities to ensure future compliance with Pollution Prevention Permits. Improvements were also made to the existing Transfer Station in Campbeltown.

The range of engineering works included the installation of leachate collection and treatment systems through aeration lagoons and reed beds, temporary and permanent capping to the existing landfill, steel clad portal frame compost buildings, reception buildings, pumping stations and pipework, hardstandings, access roads, fencing, earthworks and ditches.
The project was procured through Option C of the Engineering and Construction Contract (Target Price with Activity Schedule). Our scope included design of the mechanical and electrical works included in the scheme.
